Rifugi delle Pale
Before venturing onto the trails that lead to the Pale di San Martino, which are well-marked and maintained by the volunteers of the Cai – Italian Alpine Club, Primiero section and the Paneveggio-Pale di San Martino Nature Park, it’s best to consult the alpine guides, the historic “Eagles” of San Martino di Castrozza and Primiero. Their headquarters are located at the local Tourism Office, just a few minutes’ walk from Hotel Panorama. The Rifugi delle Pale (mountain huts) are all essential stops for well-trained and experienced hikers, but with a bit of stamina and the company of an alpine guide, they can be reached by most mountain walkers. From San Martino, you can access Rifugio Pedrotti alla Rosetta (also reachable by lift), Rifugio Velo della Madonna, and Rifugio Pradidali. Rifugio Mulaz is accessible from Passo Rolle or Val Venegia, while the hike to Rifugio Treviso in Val Canali is the least challenging of
the group.
These huts originally served as shelters for climbers and alpinists, offering refuge from the unpredictable weather that is common in the mountains. Today, they still provide hearty Dolomitic cuisine, with dishes designed to satisfy and recharge you after a strenuous ascent. They embody the spirit of adventure and respect for nature that characterizes high-altitude explorers. However, don’t expect the luxuries of a starred restaurant here—these huts offer rustic hospitality in keeping with their rugged surroundings. The five rifugi of the Pale di San Martino are part of the “Dolomite Huts, UNESCO World Heritage” system, recognized for their vital role in preserving both the land and the culture of these mountains. Look for the plaque at the entrance—a small but meaningful detail that highlights their importance. The hut managers are true guardians, ensuring that, despite the many challenges, both the mountains and those who explore them are well cared for.
