Laghetti di Colbricon

The pristine and cold waters of the Laghetti di Colbricon rest peacefully in the natural saddle formed by the Cavallazza and Colbricon peaks, mountains that still bear the scars of the trenches from the Great War. Today, they are places of peace and tranquility, perfect for spending a relaxing day, perhaps enjoying lunch at thecozy little mountain hut with its charming veranda.
These lakes have been frequented since prehistoric times. Ten thousand years ago, Mesolithic hunters from the Adige and Brenta valleys ventured here to hunt during the summer. The significance of the lakes as an ancient hunting ground was discovered by Gianluigi Secco, known as “Giangi” to his friends, who in 1971, while visiting the lakes with his uncle Luigi, stumbled upon a small piece of flint.

This discovery sparked important studies that led paleontologists to rewrite human history. That little, oddly shaped stone was not just a natural artifact; it bore signs of having been intentionally sharpened by a prehistoric man to create tools for hunting and daily life. Additional flints were later discovered and are now on display at the Bar Centrale in San Martino di Castrozza, where Giangi is happy to recount the tale of that lucky find. This fascinating story adds yet another layer of historical significance to the natural beauty of the Laghetti di Colbricon, making it a must-see destination fornature lovers and history buffs alike.
