Altopiano delle Pale
At first glance, the Altopiano delle Pale di San Martino resembles a lunar landscape, with its vast, flat expanse and its initial impression of a barren rock desert. This unique setting is said to have inspired the eclectic writer and mountaineer Dino Buzzati when creating the setting for the Bastiani Fortress in his famous novel The Tartar Steppe.
However, its 50 square kilometers of pure dolomitic limestone, surrounded by the most renowned Dolomitic peaks, are dotted with edelweiss, cinquefoil, rock
bellflowers, yellow poppies, and a network of trails that lead to climbing spots and descend into the valleys. This is a truly unique Dolomitic landscape.
The Altopiano delle Pale offers a classic, safe hiking experience. Visitors are taken to the summit via the Colverde then the Rosetta cable cars, climbing a remarkable 1,200 meters in just a few minutes from the center of San Martino di Castrozza—just a ten-minute walk from Hotel Panorama. From the cable car, you can admire a stunning panorama that stretches from Tognola to Ces, from Passo Rolle to the Marmolada. Look closely, and you’ll even see Lake Calaita (an excursion not to miss—ask Roberta and Manuela for all the details!).
From the plateau, the view extends even further, reaching as far as Antelao, Pelmo, and Civetta. This experience is not only visually captivating but also offers a real lesson in geography, geology, and mountaineering history in an open-air classroom. At the top of the cable car, the Rifugio Rosetta and nearby mountain huts offer tasty, flavorful typical cuisine and a welcoming place to rest.
