Hiking trails in San Martino di Castrozza

Altopiano delle Pale

The Pale di San Martino Plateau is a vast Dolomite landscape that resembles a lunar environment, inspiring Dino Buzzati’s The Tartar Steppe. Despite its barren appearance, it is rich in alpine flora and scenic trails. Easily accessible via the Colverde cable car and Rosetta funicular, it allows a quick ascent of 1,200 meters from the center of San Martino di Castrozza. From the plateau, the view extends to peaks such as the Marmolada, Antelao, and Civetta, offering a unique experience of nature, geology, and mountaineering history. To complete the excursion, the mountain huts at the top provide a welcoming break with delicious traditional cuisine.

Val venegia

Val Venegia, located in the Paneveggio-Pale di San Martino Natural Park, is a traffic-free valley with access points at Passo Rolle and Pian dei Casoni, also reachable by bus and park shuttles. Famous for its alpine pastures, it is home to cows that produce high-quality milk, used for the renowned Botìro di Primiero butter. Along the valley, two traditional malghe offer tastings of local dairy products. A wide dirt road, also suitable for trekking strollers, runs through the valley amid green meadows, the Travignolo stream, and forests leading to the Pale di San Martino peaks, including Cimon della Pala, Vezzana, and Mulaz. Val Venegia is a peaceful retreat, offering an immersive experience in the pristine nature of the Dolomites.

Baita Segantini

Baita Segantini is dedicated to the Trentino painter Giovanni Segantini and was built in 1936 by Alfredo Paluselli, who dreamed of living there in solitude. It offers a breathtaking view: on one side, the Lagorai mountain range with Colbricon; on the other, the Pale di San Martino, with the iconic Cimon della Pala. Nearby, Monte Castellazzo invites hikers to follow the scenic Trekking of the Thinking Christ. Located within the Paneveggio-Pale di San Martino Natural Park, the area is a paradise of alpine biodiversity, home to rare flowers like gentians, lilies, and buttercups. Hidden among the trees, deer and roe deer can sometimes be spotted at dawn and dusk. Baita Segantini is a magical place, a must-visit for those who love the mountains and their timeless beauty.

Rifugi delle Pale

Before exploring the Pale di San Martino trails, it is advisable to consult the alpine guides, the historic “Eagles” of San Martino di Castrozza and Primiero, whose office is at the Tourist Board. The trails, maintained by the CAI volunteers and the Paneveggio-Pale di San Martino Natural Park, are well marked. The mountain huts in the area are essential stops for experienced hikers, but with some training and the support of guides, they can be reached by many enthusiasts. From San Martino, hikers can reach Rifugio Pedrotti alla Rosetta, Velo della Madonna, and Pradidali, while Mulaz can be accessed from Passo Rolle or Val Venegia. Rifugio Treviso in Val Canali is the easiest to reach. Val Venegia, with its meadows, the Travignolo stream, and forests extending up to the Pale di San Martino, offers a rejuvenating experience immersed in nature, far from the noise and stress of daily life.

Laghetti di Colbricon

The clear, cold waters of the Colbricon Lakes rest peacefully in a natural saddle between the Cavallazza and Colbricon peaks, where trenches from World War I still mark the landscape. Today, they are places of peace and beauty, perfect for a relaxing day, perhaps with lunch at the charming lakeside hut with its panoramic veranda. These lakes have been visited since prehistoric times. Ten thousand years ago, Mesolithic hunters from the Adige and Brenta valleys came here during the summer to hunt. The site's historical significance was discovered in 1971 by Gianluigi Secco, known as "Giangi," who found a flint tool while visiting the lakes with his uncle. This small artifact led to important archaeological research, proving human presence in the area far earlier than previously thought. Some of these flints are now displayed at the Bar Centrale in San Martino di Castrozza, where Giangi himself enjoys telling the story of his remarkable find.

E-bike

Riding an e-bike is an incredible experience, especially in the stunning landscapes of the Primiero Valley. Former world mountain bike champion Massimo Debertolis, who was born and trains here, would confirm that the possibilities are endless. From the easy Family Green Way Primiero loop to more challenging routes through forests and dirt roads at the foot of the Pale di San Martino, there’s something for everyone. Popular destinations include Malga Crel, Baita Segantini, Val Venegia, Val Canali, and Caltena. The best routes for exploring this beautiful natural area are well-marked, and at Hotel Panorama, Roberta and Manuela can provide maps, suggest rental shops, and recommend expert instructors. With the Colverde and Tognola lifts, you can take your bike up to higher elevations and enjoy thrilling downhill rides, which require some experience and training.
